Aerial view of Masada’s mountaintop ruins. Herod the Great developed Masada as a palace-fortress beginning around 35 BCE. It later became the final Jewish rebel stronghold during the First Jewish–Roman War, falling to the Romans in 73 or 74 CE. 66 CE: Jewish rebels captured Masada during the First Jewish–Roman War. 73 or 74 CE: The Roman Tenth Legion breached the fortress after its famous siege.
